“We like having people visit our farm to buy our wonderful berries and sweet corn, but also to learn more about our farm” said Devinder Maan, when asked about why her family likes farming and why it is important. “We need the public to support us” she said, “but we also enjoy providing quality food products to local people and they seem to appreciate that these products are available”.
The Maans have been farming since 1977 and in 1982 they started selling their farm products directly to consumers from the farm. Their main products are berries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, but they also sell sweet corn. “We are also setting up a farm animal display for the children” said Devinder. “Families can come to our farm and the children can really have a pleasant, and learning, experience” she said. The Maans are also installing a corn maze that will be open in the early Fall.
The total Maan farm operation is 28 acres but they have it in more than one location. It is entirely a family business providing four full-time jobs and lots of work for part-time pickers. They pride themselves on being responsible and conscientious growers. And Abbotsford citizens seem to agree as the Maans were voted in the Abbotsford News poll of 2008 to have the best berries in Abbotsford and the best U-pick operation in Abbotsford. Down the road the Maans are planning to expand their farm market and they will be opening a winery at some point in the not too distant future.
